How to Measure Your Kitchen: Sheffield Kitchen Measure Up Guide
If you’re planning a new kitchen in Sheffield, understanding the space you’re working with is a great place to begin. At Square German Kitchens Barnsley, many clients from Fulwood to Dore, and from Nether Edge to Crosspool, like to bring their own kitchen measurements to our Barnsley showroom for an initial consultation. This can be incredibly helpful in shaping ideas and providing a preliminary design direction.
But don’t worry if measuring up your kitchen isn’t something you’re comfortable with—our expert kitchen designers are always happy to visit your home. In fact, we will do this regardless to double-check your space before finalising your design. So even if you’re not sure your measurements are accurate, your design will still be spot on.

Why Measuring Your Kitchen is Useful
Visiting our Barnsley kitchen showroom—just a short drive from Sheffield—is a great opportunity to see our stunning displays from leading German brands like Nobilia, Leicht, Next125, and Schüller, and to speak with one of our Sheffield kitchen design experts about how your ideas could translate into a bespoke kitchen design tailored to your needs. It’s not essential, but bringing rough measurements of your kitchen allows us to:
- Visualise your space during your consultation
- Provide more informed advice on layout and features
- Offer an estimated cost range based on your kitchen’s dimensions
- Speed up the design process if you’re excited to move things forward quickly
Step-by-Step Guide: How to Measure Your Kitchen
When it comes to measuring up your kitchen, you don’t need fancy tools or technical knowledge—just a tape measure, some paper, and a pencil. Here’s what you need to do:
1. Sketch Your Kitchen Shape
Draw a simple outline of your kitchen’s floor plan as seen from above. Square paper proves helpful for this, but it doesn’t need to be to scale—just include all the walls and note where any corners or alcoves are.
2. Measure Each Wall
Measure the full length of each wall from corner to corner. Write down the measurements in millimetres or centimetres.
3. Include All Fixed Features
Mark and measure the following:
- Doors (width and height)
- Windows (width and height, and distance from floor and ceiling)
- Radiators, boilers, and any boxed-in pipework
- The ceiling height
4. Note Plumbing and Electrical Points
Jot down where your sink, hob, oven, sockets, and switches are currently positioned. These can all be moved, but it helps to know their original placement.
5. Indicate Obstructions
Include any beams, bulkheads, sloped ceilings or other architectural quirks that might impact the layout.
6. Mark the Direction of Door Swings
This small detail helps us understand flow and space usage. Indicate whether doors open into or out of the room.
7. Take Photos
If you’re visiting our Barnsley kitchen showroom, bring a few photos along with you. These help us get a feel for the space, light, and any design opportunities.

FAQ: Sheffield Kitchen Measure Up Guide
- Do I have to measure my kitchen myself?
Not at all. You can, but we offer a free home kitchen design visit across Sheffield, including areas like Ecclesall, Hunters Bar, and Totley. One of our expert kitchen designers will visit and take exact measurements for you. - Can you design my kitchen if I bring rough sizes?
Yes. If you bring rough sizes, we can start creating ideas and even offer a provisional, ballpark quote by the end of the first meeting. However, we will still always conduct a full technical measure before finalising your design and ordering your kitchen.
- What if I have an unusual kitchen shape?
No problem. We’ve worked in Victorian terraces, Sheffield semis, and ultra-modern open-plan extensions. Whether you’re in Broomhill or Hillsborough, we’ll work around any quirks to create a beautiful, functional space.
- Do I need to bring anything else to my design consultation?
Please bring your room dimensions, a few photos, and any ideas or inspiration you love—from Pinterest boards to magazine cut-outs. If you’ve had building work done recently, architectural plans are helpful too.
